Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is a severe infection that may damage your gum tissue and jaw bone. Without treatment, the gum infection may lead to tooth loss. The good news is that you can reverse and prevent this dental issue by brushing your teeth at least twice daily, flossing and scheduling routine dental check-ups and cleaning.
Periodontal treatment doesn’t have to include any form of surgery. Our dentist in Guelph, ON, recommends non-surgical periodontal treatments, such as scaling and root planing to help restore your dental health.
First, your dentist near you carefully cleans the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] that form between your teeth and gums. Next, your dentist will do root planing, which smoothens your tooth root to help your gums reattach to your teeth. Our dentist may recommend antimicrobial agents or oral antibiotics to help with your recovery from the procedure.
If necessary, our Campus Dentist team may need to perform host modulation, which involves administering additional medication into the gums to repair the effects of long-term gum disease or prevent further infections. In severe cases, our dentist may recommend periodontal surgery to restore your dental health.
Most patients don’t require any further active treatment after scaling and root planing, including surgical therapy. However, we recommend scheduling routine dental checkups and cleanings to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy.
